French/Week 10

Listening: following the gist

Mostly technique rather than vocabulary. The goal this week is the gist of a clip, not every word in it — and learning to be comfortable with that is the actual skill.

Question word

Fixed chunk

Learn it whole. Do not take it apart.

Only a handful of new phrases this week. Your review load should feel light, which is intentional — the time goes into listening instead.

Phrases for when you are lost

Learn all five properly. Being able to ask someone to slow down is worth more than another twenty nouns.

  • [je ne comprends pas]I don't understand
  • [plus lentement, s'il vous plaît]more slowly, please
  • [répétez, s'il vous plaît]repeat, please
  • Qu'est-ce que ça veut dire ?What does that mean?
  • Comment on dit … ?How do you say…?

Point at the thing and say this. It works every time.

The three-step method

A practice transcript

Read this slowly first. Then find a real clip and try to catch the green verbs and orange nouns the same way.

Hier, je suis allé au parc.

J'ai vu mon ami et nous avons mangé au café.

[À mon avis,] [c'était] très bon.

Before you read the translation

  • 1Who is speaking?
  • 2Where did they go?
  • 3What did they do there?

Yesterday I went to the park. I saw my friend and we ate at the café. In my opinion, it was very good.

Where to listen this week

InnerFrench for clear, slow Parisian French — pick the early, shorter episodes. Coffee Break French for structured lessons, which suit the second pass well. Easy French for real street interviews with subtitles, which is the best material for third-pass shadowing. Use one source for all three passes rather than hopping between them.

Daily mini-tasks

A new card type this week

Add audio-to-meaning cards: a short spoken sentence on the front, the English on the back. Every other card you have trains the eye. This one trains the ear, which is the sense you will actually be using in France.

Listening this week

InnerFrench, Coffee Break French, or Easy French

Podcast apps and YouTube

Pick one clip of one to two minutes and use it all week for the three passes. Familiarity is the point — you are training the technique, not hunting for new material.
